“It feels great. It actually feels amazing.” – Jess Fishlock on being back in Seattle.
Thanks to Jess for spending a few minutes with us during her week in Seattle! Who can’t wait to see #10 during the 2014 season? Our hand is raised.
#WeekofReign is finishing with a bang!
Jess Fishlock has signed a new contract with Reign FC that will see her remain in Seattle for the 2014 NWSL season, with club options for both the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
Reign FC originally acquired Fishlock as an international discovery player on Feb. 4, 2013. Fishlock started in all 21 of her appearances in 2013, scoring four goals in 1878 minutes. The Welsh National Teamer was the only member of Reign FC to be named to the 2013 NWSL Best XI and was voted NWSL “Player of the Week” in the second week of the 2013 NWSL season.
Coach Harvey shared these comments: “Jess is a dynamic, talented player and was an integral part of our squad last year. She is a big part of our plans going forward, making it an easy decision to offer a new contract.”
Jess has spent the offseason playing overseas for Glasgow City LFC of the Scottish Women’s Premier League and Melbourne Victory of the Australian W-League.
And a few thoughts from Jess: “I am absolutely thrilled to be extending my contract. For me, playing for the Reign is an honor. I’m looking forward to building on last year and being a part of something special in Seattle.”
We can’t wait to watch Jess #LetItReign in 2014, can you?
We continue our week of player announcements with the signing of goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer. The keeper will return to Seattle for the 2014 NWSL season. Seattle also holds an option for the 2015 season.
“We believe Haley has huge potential to be a mainstay professional keeper,” general manager and head coach Laura Harvey said. “Training daily with goalkeeper coach Ben Dragavon and learning from someone of Hope Solo’s caliber will allow her to reach her full potential.”
Reign FC originally acquired Kopmeyer in the fourth round (31st overall) of the 2013 NWSL College Draft. Kopmeyer served as Seattle’s backup goalkeeper for the early part of last season while Hope Solo was recovering from a wrist injury, behind starting keeper Michelle Betos.
Welcome back Kops!
The ‘Week of Reign’ rolls on as Reign FC has signed 2014 first-round draft pick Amanda Frisbie. Seattle selected the University of Portland product with the 7th overall pick January’s college draft.
The defender was a 2013 NSCAA First Team All-American in her first year on Portland’s back line. The honor made Frisbie Portland’s first All-American since 2009.
“We wanted to sign Amanda early to demonstrate our commitment to helping her develop into a key part of our squad,” general manager and head coach Laura Harvey said. “I expect Amanda to be an integral part of our season in 2014 and believe she has the capacity to be an impact player in the league in the future.”
Even as a defender, Frisbie kept her goal scoring prowess and finished second on the team tallying eight goals. The McKinney, Texas native also lead the team with four game-winning goals. She started in all 20 of her appearances while racking up 1,710 minutes, and earned WCC Defender of the year honors.
The ‘Week of Reign’ continues today as Reign FC has signed free-agent defender Kendall Fletcher for the 2014 NWSL season. Fletcher comes over from the Australian W-League having most recently played for Canberra United.
“Kendall adds experience and depth to our backline and potentially our midfield as well,” said head coach Laura Harvey. “She has proven professional experience both in America and in Europe which could prove vital for us in the coming season.”
The defender spent her college years at the University of North Carolina where she scored 13 goals with 18 assists in four seasons as a Tar Heel. Fletcher was part of UNC’s National Championship team in 2003 as well as three ACC Championship teams in 2002, 2003, and 2005.
Fletcher has US International experience as a member of the U-19 squad that won the first-ever U-19 World Cup in 2002. She’s also made appearances for the U-21 team and has one USWNT cap back in 2009.
Welcome to Seattle Kendall
We begin our week of Reign FC announcements with a massive signing:
Forward Nahomi “Naho” Kawasumi of Japanese side INAC Kobe Leonessa will be joining Seattle Reign FC for the 2014 NWSL season.
In 2013, Naho was named the Nadeshiko League MVP, was the league’s second leading scorer behind Reign FC’s Bev Goebel, and has been on the league’s Best XI roster four years running. She scored a combined 46 goals for INAC from 2009-2012. Naho helped lead INAC to three consecutive Nadeshiko league titles from 2011-2013.
"Naho is a world-class talent who will add a different dimension to our front line in the coming season," said GM and head coach Laura Harvey.
Naho’s international career is highlighted by a FIFA World Cup gold medal in 2011 and an Olympic silver medal in 2012. She netted a brace in a 3-1 win against Sweden during the 2011 World Cup, and scored the opening goal
against Canada in a 2-0 win during the 2012 Summer Olympics.
“I’m very happy to be a member of Seattle Reign FC,” Naho said. “Though it’s my first time to live and play in the US, I will adapt myself to my new life as soon as possible. I’ll try to do my best for the victory of Seattle Reign FC. You can count on my play.”
